Michael.
---
The major user-side benefits are:
i) Improved overall stability and security of the client.
ii) Snazzy graphics. This is of importance to some users, but not to others.
There also exists a F@h3.0 text-based console client.
iii) Control over client process priority and CPU usage.
iv) Vastly improved proxy/firewall support. The client can work over port
80, although a G@h port 80 server won't be set up until next week.
v) Ability to run both F@h and G@h cores from the same client.
The major science-side benefits are:
i) Auto-update of cores. This is absolutely critical for portions of the
future scientific work of the G@h project, as it allows us to run and
evaluate different protein design algorithms, and is the main reason for the
shift to the F@h infrastructure.
ii) Ability to handle larger proteins.
iii) Improved client-side security & data integrity checks.
Which of the bugs have been fixed? Which of the enhancements have been included? Who will be responsible for this new folding client and will we be getting any better management?
Some of the bugfixes and improvements over the 0.99 client are:
i) Fewer auxilliary files, which means less can go wrong.
ii) The Filter code is embedded in the core and runs at idle priority.
iii) Use of better compiler technology in building the executable (which as a side-benefit eliminates that annoying trig underflow error message that pops up once in a blue moon).
The F@h3.x client development and support is handled by the Folding@home software development team. The development and support of the G@h core is and will be handled by me, primarily, along with some new scientists joining the project.
Of course, the decision to use the 0.99 client or the F@h2.x/3.x clients to run Genome@home is up to the individual user, depending on his/her priorities, computing resources, etc.
Hope that helps some - Stefan
