This are the messages. All jobs starts again and again and again.
If i reset and even detach the project the same problem and even the same wu's are downloaded again.

Looks much like that old conceptional heartbeat bug in BOINC that D.A. loves so much that he declared it to be a feature (I guess he made that misconcept).

If it has been that, you most likely have a message in your stdout of the crashed workunits.

The cause is, that the core client is so busy with zipping files and/or accessing a blocking project server that it finds no time to refresh the timestamp in the shared memory.

On my Xeon box it had been quite bad until I reduced from 16 to 15 concurrent BOINC tasks. That did not eliminate the problem but it is was less likely now.

What can i do to resolve this problem?

I did uninstall everything, including boinc-manager, nvdia-driver, rna and gpugrid.

Also chkdsk c: /r /f and later sfc /scannow.

This machine is Patrick (9125) - XP-pro - 64 bits.

Basically it is a BOINC bug so they should fix it. There are some things that you can do though :

A virus scanner can influence it, automatic windows updates can cause trouble - but usually it is the BOINC client process itself that causes the problems. Stuck project communication can hardly be avoided except for lowering the timeout (BOINC side), zip/unzip activities using the BOINC builtin ZIP library is necessary for some projects - RNA doesn't use the builtin ZIP lib so that does not affect the BOINC core client but some CPDN models manage to crash all other projects when the core client unzips their huge files.

On my dual quadcore Xeon (HT enabled) machine I reduced the number of BOINC tasks from 16 to 15, leaving a bit more spare CPU load for system and core client but that does not help against the impact of CPDN models, so I start a fresh CPDN model only when no RNAWorld task is running.


Yoyo could help by increasing the maximum allowed time between two heartbeats. This is a minor change to the BOINC API sources, I hope he will do it sometimes but he will have to do it anytime he updates his BOINC source codes from Berkeley.


p.s.: I already mentioned the problem with those huge archives in the CPDN board but there hasn't been any change since then :-/


p.p.s.: Any powersaving mode that powers down CPU or the whole system can kill the RNA tasks of course.

Thx for all the suggestions.

I installed now new boinc-manager 06.12.33 and run only the small wu's and the problem is over for now. (two days).

I have for years now McAfee Virusscanner and no auto windows updates.

I use this machine only for crunching RNA and GPUGID.
