Re: Aborted Work Units
BOINC projects are happy with 2% valid results, just hosts that return less than 2% valid results get a serious quota penalty.
Imo. that's a bug but the Berkeley guys think about it as a feature.
edit : the bugfix would be
got_good_result()
n = max_jobs_per_day+1
instead of
n = max_jobs_per_day*2
got_bad_result()
n /= 2
instead of
n -= 1
but this bug cannot be fixed alone (here), there is another ancient bug that would need to be fixed in order to make things work properly : Workunits that are aborted on server side or results that breach rsc_fpops_bound should of course not touch the quota.

Re: Aborted Work Units
I do not see an issue in aborting workunits. Each host has a daily result quota and will not get more wus if to many wus are sent to a host. These quota are set to the project needs. From project point of view it is more a problem with users who do not report results, because the left the project or other causes. In this case the scheduler must wait until the deadline of the lost results until they can be resent. Aborted wus can be resent immediate.
These MP workunits require much memory and not many users are able to run them. So James (the author) and I are happy that some users take them. Each user can fetch and run them.

Re: Aborted Work Units
Could both of you please stop this very personal discussion here on the internet, please? The problem stated and described in the first post is solved and an explanation was given. Full stop.
Here in this discussion it is of very little interest (read: none) whether one of you has ever offended the other one in another discussion no matter where.
I would advice you to privately meet somewhere in a pub, have a pint or two and come over your issues. Both of you. You are humans, you both have a brain and can speak. Use it free of prejudices to understand the other one's point of view.
At this point, I will not close this thread, though somebody else might.
This is a message board for discussions. Discussions about facts, based on facts. As well as discussions about philosophies and points of view based on subjective feelings. But personal offences of any kind are absolutely off way.
Cheers,
Torbjörn

Re: Aborted Work Units
Hi Tom, I wouldn't worry about it. The mp WUs are the ones that bring most machines to their knees. Like yoyo said, it's not a problem to abort WUs. Those that have the machines to handle the most difficult WUs will run them. BTW, your English is great.tommat hat geschrieben:Hello,

Edit: I can perhaps give you an idea about what's happening. An mp WU (or more) slows to a crawl and takes a long time to complete. Then BOINC escalates the DCF to a very high figure which causes all the Yoyo WUs to have crazy high estimated completion times. The DCF will be raised because of 1 unreasonably long WU but will take MUCH longer to return to reality (a BOINC problem, not Yoyo). This can also happen with some of the longer Harmonius Trees WUs, although with HT it's because the WUs can be highly unpredictable. It's happened to me on many occasions

Re: Aborted Work Units
tbh, I deleted one or 2 of those 322 hour WUs, because with BOINC being thrown immediately into high priority mode, and no idea of the real crunch time, didn't exactly like the idea that my computer would be under constant commitment to try to meet the deadline. Laptop here, and I do want to have use of it for game playing and the like, which means suspending BOINC so I have the CPU cycles for my own uses.
BOINC is great for giving the comp something to do when we're not using it, and things like checking email or web browsing barely touches the computer's resources, but sometimes we do want to use the computer we put money into, for something far more involved then checking email. Of note, when one's raiding or something, one doesn't want any computer delay when a mob might drop fire on one's arse, one could have their hind quarters turned into a pin cushion by a rump ranger, or lag could mean getting fragged or rofl stomped :d It can make a difference when gaming, if the computer is busily crunching, even if it is a lower priority, in basic frame rate and computer responsiveness. Least been my experience.
Oh, and if some are arguing, no idea, for the rest of us, clicking on a link and finding a whole bunch of deleted posts is, umm how should I put this. One is left wondering if they're stepping into something, or whatever by entering in. Especially for third parties who really haven't been a party, or even around to see what's going on
Generally, one's left with the impression of, umm /eek
