I have a number of questions.
1. Is it possible to implement an overview where an individual contributer can view all species that have been modelled by himself?
2. Is it possible to implement an option to select a specific species, e.g. tasman tiger, that is modelled exclusively - provided the required data sets are available?
3. How can I find out whether sufficient data is available to model a specific species?
Thanks for your comments

Hi Michael,
Sorry for the delayed answer - we just lost a project member to another job, and we are trying hard to catch up on everything that he was doing. Your suggestions are good ones, although I'm afraid it may be a little while before we can think about implementing anything new.
Here are your answers.
1. Currently we don't have any way for an individual to do this. It might make an interesting web service though.
2. We also don't have a way to pick a species for modeling. We had considered this, but were concerned that the less popular species might not get processed.
3. To see if there are enough points for modeling, do a search on the FindSpecies page (choose Maps and Models from the Quick Links section on the left). The resulting table has a column on the right side (Garp Model Status). If that says "Seeking Data Points", there are not enough points to model the species.
Thanks for your interest and support,
LM Project Team (Aimee)Michael.

Thanks for your reply,
however, when I search for Thylacinus cyanocepshaplus or tasman tiger, I
don't get a "seeking" indication on the search results page. Instead,
"legend" appears as a clickable text which then leads to an error message
when opening link in a new browser window (just clicking results in
nothing). Also, I tried to search for data for apes (orangutan - typed in in
several varieties) because I though here at least some data points should
definetely exist. But: no data appears to be found. How is that possible?
Best regards,
Michael.

Hi Michael,
I searched on Thylacinus cyanocepshaplus and tasman tiger and got no results for either name. Our user interface is not very intuitive - we would like to rework that if possible. I also did not find any results for orangutan or apes. I did find that we have 80 specimen records for Pan troglodytes, but none of them have been geo-referenced.
We currently have about 200 institutions worldwide (check the Partners page if you are interested in who they are), but apparently they have very few specimen records of great apes. Since these records are tied to specimens, perhaps most of the great apes data is observational data (which we currently do not collect).
Thanks for your interest and suggestions,

Hi,
and thanks for the quick response. ;-) I am a bit surprised that even for
the great apes there is not sufficient data. I mean for orangutan it is long
known that they do exclusively occur in Sumatra and Borneo and are close to
extinction. Isn't there a possibility to get more institutes involved in the
project?
Best regards,
Michael.Code: Alles auswählen
Hi,
Each specimen record represents an actual specimen (dead organism) housed in a museum or other institution. Perhaps great apes are not collected as often as other organisms? I'm not sure - I'm just a computer person :).
We would love to get more institutions involved. The ones that do participate make their data available through the internet for automatic collection in a standard format. Some do not have the resources to do that right now, although we (the Informatics department at KU's Natural History Museum) are involved in several projects that help museums and other institutions digitize their data, and make it available on servers for querying. The number of providers that we have has doubled in the last year, so there is progress out there.
