GPU-Client.
  • "(...) I can mention several facts that will help answer your question but you'll have to weigh the factors and make your own decision.

I expect that the next generation of GPUs will hit the market in a month or two. I have no idea what will happen on the hardware side then. Competition is driving both companies to improve their product line. Of course that also means lower prices on current generation hardware, if that's part of your plan.

There is a distinct difference in how the two GPU internal hardware designs handle different sized proteins. The NV hardware is particularly effective when running small proteins. With larger proteins, the performance gap narrows. A lot of people purchased NV hardware based on the statistics from the early test projects which happened to be all small WUs.

Some of the FAH performance differences can be attributed to hardware and some to the drivers. I'm seeing frequent driver changes on the ATI side and less frequent changes on the NV side. That might mean that ATI will close the gap -- but we won't know until (or IF) it happens. (...)" (Quelle)
Gehört eigenlich auch zum Thread HighEnd-Grafikkarten.

News von 28.04.2009 zum MemtestG80, ein Tool für die RAM-Prüdung von CUDA-Grafikkarten:
NVIDIA GPU memory checker

Aus der Beschreibung der Readme:
  • "MemtestG80 is a program to test the memory and logic of NVIDIA CUDA-enabled GPUs for errors.

MemtestG80 is licensed under a closed-source license found in the COPYING file included with this distribution. It can also be found by running MemtestG80 with the --license flag, or at the end of this README.

An open-source version of MemtestG80 implementing the same memory tests as the closed-source version is also available. However, certain functionality is missing, such as the ability to transmit test results back to Stanford to help gather statistics and improve the state of GPU computing."

  • "* If your card generates errors and is overclocked (this includes "factory overclocked" or "superclocked" cards - anything with higher-than-reference clock speeds), reset the clock frequencies to the NVIDIA reference frequencies and see if the problem persists.

This is especially true for the memory clock. Errors in the Logic or Random Blocks tests are likely to be at least somewhat sensitive to the shader clock as well. The upshot of this guideline is that if your overclock is generating any errors above the stock frequencies, then it's not a stable overclock.

    * If after this your card still generates errors in any test OTHER than the Modulo-20 test, pull it. These errors are likely indicative of a card that's gone bad somehow."

How does FAH code development and sysadmin get done?
  • "(...) As the GPU2 code base matured in functionality, GPU2 core development has been mainly bug fixes, which is a good thing. SMP2 has been testing in house for a while and I expect it will still take a few weeks. The main issue is trying to make sure we get good scalability with threads based solutions, removing bottlenecks, etc. The SMP2 initiative lead to two different cores, one for the Desmond code from DE Shaw Research and another for a Gromacs variant (a variant of the A4 core). We having been testing both in single cpu-core format (the A4 Gromacs core is a single core version of what will become SMP2) and we hope to release in a week or two a set of single core Desmond jobs. If those look good, multiple-core versions via threads (not MPI) will follow thereafter. (...)"

  • "(...) Current projects are NOT designed to take advantage of a single device with multiple GPUs. Even if you were to manage to run two of the current projects on a sli device, you will waste resources because of system congestion waiting for that single device. Projects that run effectively on an array as a single device will need to be structured differently using larger proteins."
:good:

Re: FAH-News

A new type of work unit
  • "Why a new work unit category?

We have some specific projects where we 1) have large simulation systems and 2) want to get results fast. As multi-core processors get more powerful, we can perform calculations on Folding@Home that previously required supercomputing clusters.

What's different about these work units from the donor perspective?

These work units are special SMP work units that have larger upload and download sizes, shorter deadlines, and require more memory and CPU resources. That's why we've created a new category.
    (...)
Does this have any relation to the large-points value work units and recent high-scoring users?

Yes. The initial projects are 2681 and 2682, valued at ~25K points base. Although these point values seem high, the work units are correspondingly larger, so the base PPD (points per day) value is roughly comparable to standard SMP. (...)"

  • "These projects study how influenza virus recognizes and infects cells. We are developing new simulation methods to better understand these processes. "
Recht neu ist
- ein Abstract vom 15.08.2009: Folding@Home - FAH results on Influenza
- und das Paper Nr. 69 vom 28.07.2009 (Abstract): Combining Molecular Dynamics with Bayesian Analysis To Predict and Evaluate Ligand-Binding Mutations in Influenza Hemagglutinin.

Pande Team PPD!!!
  • "Yes. It also takes 3 days to run on a dedicated 8-core box. If you have such hardware and are interested in helping with these work units, let me know." (kasson)
bzw. in der offiziellen Vorstellung
new release: extra-large work units

Gar eine neue Foren-Rubrik wurde kreiert:
