RAM is the abbreviation for Random Access Memory and that usually means the computer memory. It stores data used directly by the CPU.
The memory is "volatile", i.e. after switching off the power supply all data stored in it is lost. This also explains data losses that occur in case of improper shutdown of the computer (for example, power failure).
