The Malaria Control Project deals with the modelling of clinical epidemiology and the natural history of Plasmodium falciparum malaria. There are four different types of Malaria known, which are quite different concerning the course as well as its spreading. However, Plasmodium falciparum is arguably the most dangerous pathogen of all. Actually, it is a parasite, which is passed on to humans by female mosquitoes. The projects aim is to obtain valuable intel on how the pathogen spreads, in order to systematically fight this disease.

This is the first of Africa@home's projects using the BOINC-client. The scientific basis was described in a special edition of The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. The published papers (respectively their summaries) can be found here.

Note: This project does not develope any vaccines. Instead the pathogen-spread is simulated.

Duration is the average computing time needed, having the CPU clocked at the variable.
Deadline is the timespan, within which the Work unit needs to be finished.

Client Specifics

  • The new wrapper application does not support checkpointing. Meaning that a paused task needs to be started all over again. The wrapper application is only available to users, who want to receive test WU's.
  • The regular application supports checkpointing.
  • This project no longer provides graphics.

Configuration under Windows

Malaria Control (beendet) uses the BOINC infrastructure. The registration, installation and configuration are described in the user manual.
