It's a monster task, that will take a CPU like yours roughly 170-300 days.

Feel free to play with my "BOINC Task Estimate Calculator.xlsx" file:

If you use the Virtualbox extension kit, you will see the initial forecast run in the console window.
Other measures to check whether an RNA World VM task is still alive and computing is to check that it uses CPU load in the task manager and that it regularly writes checkpoints and continues to increase the run time values - all of which you can observe when you select the task in BOINC and then click on "properties".

Yes, only few people participate under these demanding constraints and there is a bunch of WUs which we have to manually validate because we switched to another system approach at that time which is incompatible with automatic validation.
JeromeC hat geschrieben:also I can see many failure of it are due to "Error while computing" with very long calculation time each time, and not that many "abandoned by user", so still I can see there is a big waste of calculation power over the years...
Well, it is a only a waste if people start to work on tasks which their system can't tackle. But as said above, mostly, it is not the system but the user who, for various reasons, cause the problem.

I must admit, though, that we need to update our FAQ in several aspects.

Thanks to take the time to answer :)

It actually works !

Bild

I found out I have to type any key being on the blank screen and then I have the display ! It's some kind of blank screen saver in the VM :)

Does it look OK ? I don't like the "failed" messages I can see there...

However the VBoxHeadless process is eating up until one core and the calculation time + % completed are going up, and so does the time with checkpoints, so it seems ok.

Yes, this is how it should look like.

As long as you take care that you don't overload your system memory and let the machine connect to the internet around once every two weeks, everything should run fine. Also, please do not upgrade Virtualbox or BOINC as long as one WU is running. Some people say, it's OK o do that, but I wouldn't risk it (I know, this indeed is kind of uncool).

OK, then I must not forget the "do not upgrade"... it doesn't happen very often, but I have a natural tendency to "let's do it", so I must think about it ! :bugeye:

I did not upgrade. Calculation error after 40 days. 0 credit.

I'm sorry. It's heartbreaking when these tasks fail, especially after so much computation that can't be recovered.

These tasks really are MONSTERS. It's taking everything I know, to keep them running smoothly, on my machines. Whenever I need to close BOINC, I first suspend all, wait for CPU activity to stop, then exit BOINC, then wait for all the related processes to gracefully exit. Also, while BOINC is closed, I do weekly backups of all the in-progress RNA World VMs. I have 19, currently.

For what it's worth, looking at your failed task, I see that you had gotten this far:
2,817,246 32d 14:34:06

... and, based on Wingman CPU type and completion time, I estimate that it *would* have taken you:
You All Threads, Wingman All Threads: 7,898,201 91d 9:56:41
You All Threads, Wingman Single Thread: 15,006,582 173d 16:29:42
You Single Thread, Wingman All Threads: 6,172,997 71d 10:43:17
You Single Thread, Wingman Single Thread: 11,728,694 135d 17:58:14
BOINC Measured FLOPS (million ops/sec): 14,509,373 167d 22:22:53

So, you were probably only about 25% done with it, when it failed :o
You'll have to step up your game, if you want to give another task an attempt 8)

Hm, I have one here that ran for 11.200 hrs - still going.
Although it looks perfect, I am somehow concerned something is wrong with it.

Michael,

I can help you inspect it, and even teach you some things about it, if you'd like. Want to get together on TeamViewer, where you can share your desktop? If interested, send me a PM. I'd like to meet you - Maybe we can voicechat too!
