Re: Long running work unit
Greetings
Not sure if this is normal, been awhile since I have done one, but the following workunit
http://www.rnaworld.de/rnaworld/result. ... d=14897058
On my computer it is showing a 100 percent complete but has been still running, it has now clocked up 401 hrs 32 mins
Due date is 04 April 2013
Is there anything I can do that would ensure it can complete and report correctly.
Regards
Tazzduke

Re: Long running work unit
Hi
I have this WU (http://www.rnaworld.de/rnaworld/result. ... d=14899058) on an iMac (i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80GHz) with 25 hours and 5% done and an estimate of 1182 hours (ie 50 days) and a deadline for 23/04/2013, no checkpoint.
It's kind of hardcore, even if you extend the deadline for it, the probability of me not restarting the mac for the next 50 days is close to 0...
So my question is : is this estimate true, or is the % of work done will progress in a non linear way, meaning the WU will actually be (much ?) shorter ? If the estimate is true I prefer to cancel it and only lose 1 days of crunching, instead of 20 or more...
If you are to have such crazy long WUs, do a proper development like CPDN with checkpoints - and even tricklets.
Thanks

Re: Long running work unit
Well, this WU definetely is one of the tougher nuts (SSU WU is complex ribosomal RNA), although not THE THOUGEST (your WUs genome is NOT 30-50 MB in size but only 20-30; means it will run faster). Unfortunately, I cannot tell you definetely what will happen regarding its runtime estimate, because I never had a MAC. Under Windows, this WU type happened to finsih earlier than the estimate. Still it will require weeks to complete. Shutting down your system is unproblematic if you choose to check the "keep app in memory" checkbox in your BOINC manager settings and then USE THE HIBERNATE MODE to pause your system. Regular restart will lead to complete work loss due to the missing checkpointing, however.
With respect to the latter, I can only repeat what we have communicated so often: it is impossible to implement checkpointing in the code. But you can have checkpointing by simply choosing to run RNA World in a VM such as Virtual Box.
You can notify us here in the forum in case you need an extension of the WUs deadline.
Please also note that due to the high project requirements (long runtimes, high RAM demand) and lack of "intrinsic" checkpointing, we offer exorbitant credits per WU as a compensation.
Michael.

Re: Long running work unit
The estimated time for a workunit is just an estimation. The progress bar is also based on this estimation. For some workunits, especially for such which have "Intron" in there name, the estimation differs much from the real time needed. So it happens that the workunit stays a long time at 100%.tazzduke hat geschrieben:Greetings

But anyway, keep it running I extended your deadline by another 30 days. Youn can see this on the RNA World page but not in your boinc manager.

Re: Long running work unit
Thanks for the answer Michael, it's not that I really want to reboot, my Mac is crunching 7/7 - 24/24, and I know pretty well about the "keep app in memory" and hybernate mode (we also have this on Mac), but the point is that I don't think it ever happened that I never *had* to reboot the Mac completely for some reason (system upgrade, some - few - important apps that need reboot after upgrade, whatever) during such a long period, 50 days is really a long delay.
So I'm gonna wait a bit to see how the ratio "% / remaining time" is evolving and I'll do my best to keep the beast up, but I'm not very confident that I can make it...

&
http://www.rnaworld.de/rnaworld/workuni ... id=6077994 +50 days
THX!

Re: Long running work unit
extended by 30 days.
Re: Long running work unit
I have now estimated time 72 and 113 days and deadline 07.05.2013 so +30d will be too low extension.
Re: Long running work unit
If they are still running in 4 weeks, I'll extend them again.
