Long running work unit
Re: Long running work unit
Hello,
I'd like to ask an advice about this XXL workunit :
http://www.rnaworld.de/rnaworld/workuni ... id=5826804
56% on my computer since 22 Jul 2012.
It's not the first time I have XXL workunit, but this workunit seems to be particularly long.
I don't want to cancel it, but what do you think about the progress? Is it correct or not?
I have already ask one extension the 12.Aug.2012.
Could I have another extension please?
Danke, merci
(Sorry for my English)

How much memory does your machine have? Is the machine swpapping already?

I have 16 Go of Memory, it isn't swapping. I always have between 4 and 8 Go of free memory.
During two weeks, I stopped my other projects (WCG & malaria) (http://boincstats.com/en/stats/-1/user/ ... 237/charts), but it didn't go faster.
57.536 %, 1% since this morning. That's definitely progress, slowly, but surely (I hope).

@ninicool: OK, so RAM is not a problem for you - so you should safely finish it although I can't really tell you how long it might take.

This task is taking too much... 2306 hours ETA. And must finish on 9-22. Impossible. It's almost 100 days...
What can I do, besides aborting?

Leo

Re: Long running work unit
This thread allows you to ask for the estimated extra time needed to finish workunits, and usually receive it, but only if you ask.llagos hat geschrieben:9/14/2012 7:57:21 PM | RNA World | task cms_GA-p[e30-50MB_Lin64f]_1_Danio-rerio-(zebrafish)_CU651622.lin.EMBL_RF00028_Intron_gpI_1330438623_30212_14 resumed by user

Shutting down the task and then resuming later requires special care - you must not reboot, install an update, or turn off the power. However, you can tell BOINC to suspend the workunit, as long as you do not shut down BOINC.
Some computers allow you to go into hibernate or sleep mode while the workunit is suspended, and later wake up with the full contents of the memory restored. That is about the only way you can safely shut the power off during the nearly 100 days of runtime, without going back to something within the first 5 minutes of the workunit.
This is a consequence of the current state of checkpoints for the application - you can recover from one checkpoint within the first 5 minutes of the workunit, or one within the last 5 minutes, but nowhere else.
I had another of the Danio-rerio workunits. Over 1,900,000 seconds.
Re: Long running work unit
If I understand that right, this "9-22" is the deadline. and the 100 days are the estimated runtime.llagos hat geschrieben:... And must finish on 9-22. Impossible. It's almost 100 days... ...
Post the workunit ID here and Yoyo will enhance the deadline so you will have your 100 days. The workunit ID can be found in your task list and in the task list of your host, both linked from your home page on the RNA world project server.
p.s.: I have such a fish too (Intron), 68 days already done, result at only 41% and still running (deadline already enhanced). If you manage to bring it through, it willl give you tons of credits Yoyo installed a bonus system to encourage people to try to finish especially this nasty type of results.

Hi. You're correct, and thanks a lot! WU ID is 6039131. I see it has lots of errors, timeouts and abortions! I don't want to abort it nor to end in an error, but to finish it correctly, help the project, and get my bonusAnanas hat geschrieben:If I understand that right, this "9-22" is the deadline. and the 100 days are the estimated runtime.llagos hat geschrieben:... BTW, I have suspended for the moment. I guess I need to resume it, and do a manual Update on the project to get the new ETA, right? Or will the task automagically updated the ETA (in next checkpoint or communication with project server?)

Re: Long running work unit
Oh I forgot... I run Boinc at the office, so time of computing is about 10 hours continued on weekdays only. 2306 hours with that schedule (50 hours per week) is 46.12 weeks (322 "calendar days"). I understand ETA considers this since Boinc is smart enough to take all this into account and calculate the right ETA...?
