Superlink is a project of the biology and computer science department of the israeli Institute of Technology (Technion).
The project helps geneticists to discover genes, which trigger diseases like diabetes, hypertension, schizophrenia, cancer and others.
Therefore the genetic-compound-analysis is used. This is a statistic method to connect genetic functions to their respected positions on the chromosomes. Using this analysis, disease-triggering genes can be discovered. This method is computationally intensive and therfore the tasks are being split for distributed computing.. In order to analyse it, geneticists hand in their data, using the Superlink Online Portal. The task is then automatically parallelized and supplied to many computers in Technion, to the university of Wisconsin in Madison and to BOINC-users.
At the moment, the RAM requirement per work unit is at about 700 MB.

- DB problem and work restart
- There was a major DB problem experienced recently, so all the work had to be removed. It will be restarted anew in the nearest future. Apologies for the incovenience it may have caused. [?]
- Superlink@Technion back to life
- We are finally back online. The system is fully operational and now allows direct submission of genetic linkage analysis tasks from the Internet. Hope we will keep it alive from now on. Thanks for the support. [?]
- Scientific news update
- See the last update on the scientific results here [?]
- Huge THANK YOU to all the participants
- The last month marathon is over. About 5 mln jobs were crunched, with much success. In particular, the last batch was extremely successful and we owe a huge THANK YOU to all who participated. We reached the overall effective throughput equivalent to a dedicated cluster of 6,000 CPUs!!!!!! This is far beyond our previous result. Some of the scientific results of the last run are surprising. We will rerun a part of the experiment to make sure the results are correct, and if they are, these are very good news. We will disclose the details if the results are confirmed. We will also open another thread in our scientific forum to discuss the results of these batches. Stay tuned! [?]
- New batch with 3.3 million jobs
- The new batch with 3.3 million jobs has just been started. Thanks to all who were patient enough to wait for this batch. We made every effort to fix all the problems encountered during the previous batch, and hope that this time DDoS will not disturb us. This batch is not a challenge but a regular run, but we do hope it will be crunched quickly. Good luck to us all [?]
- Toward the end of the batch
- Thanks to our contributors this batch is quickly approaching its end. Toward the end of the run we're starting to restrict sending WUs to computers that are known to return the results without the delay. That is why many of you started receiving no-work-sent messages despite the WUs in the queue. I am preparing a new batch, but it will take about 3-4 days. So the mid-end of the next week will be busy again. [?]
- DDoS attack
- We have been under DDoS for the last few days, and it turns out that more than 40,000 connections per second were attempted to be established. This caused the Technion authority to decrease the input traffic, and later on close the service altogether. We are back to life now, but our IP has changed, in a hope to escape the DDoS. Nothing is required to be done to keep crunching - your computer will eventually find the way to the server. Hope this incident will be the last one at least until this batch is finished. [?]
- 2 mlns batch REstarted due to DB crash. Fingers crossed this time
- We didn't survive the recent power failure and lost all the 300,000 results crunched since yesterday.. Restarting everything - I apologize for all the 'not-needed' results from now on - we cannot make use of them at all. It's not only that our power failed, but also our UPS, it was too much for the DB, and the problem was revealed only now [?]
- New 2 mlns batch started
- We anounce the very first Superlink challenge!!!! We must finish this batch as fast as possible to show the peak performance of the system. This is a new 2 mlns jobs batch, and we do hope that this time there will be no glitches. The analysis of the previous run will be published soon on our forums. [?]
