Irritation.

#1 Ungelesener Beitrag von adrianxw » 10.06.2017 13:51

I looked at my account and saw that I had no profile, so figured I'd add one, but I can't because my recent credit is less than 1. The work unit I'm working on at the moment has several days of crunching on it, but it does not appear to be trickling up, so do not get credit for that. I currently have thousands of credits here, I am a little annoyed.

Well, that is actually a BOINC built-in feature and nothing we as the RNA World team have added. As soon as your RAC goes up again, editing the profile will become possible again. I experienced the same issue with other projects and indeed, it really is a bit annoying...

How do you conclude your task is not sending trickle-up messages and that it won't receive credits once sent back to our server?

Michael,

I think the user means that some projects award credits for just sending trickles... and (to my knowledge) RNA World doesn't. So... until a task is completed or error'd (only long-runners left, could take weeks/months), then the user cannot unlock the additional "credit-locked" functionality. Not sure if anything can be done.

That's right: We do not give credits for incomplete work and that for good reason, because unlike other projects, our tasks do not provide intermediate states that would be useful to us but only a single valid final result.

Maybe a workaround would be to give this user some credit (they're obviously not a robot), so they can unlock stuff?

I will ask Christian / Yoyo whether this profile adjustment blockage can be altered somehow, but I think it serves as a measure to prevent the misusage of the user profile for excessive ad posting: Thousands of users might be newly created just to put some idiotic spam in the profile and annoy regular people plus occupy our project database space. So, I do not think we are going to change this policy.

>>> do not provide intermediate states

Perhaps not, but you could send a trickle back say every 5% done, and give a trivial credit for that. If important, you could then reduce the final credit for the job by the amount awarded during the run.

>>> single valid final result.

I looked around the site trying to find the info, but have so far failed. I am a little curious about the jobs. What is the job doing, that takes so long to do, that produces only a single result?

I only have one work unit running, the project is included on my other BOINC cruncher, also a 4GHz i7, but it does not get a task.

For a general information on what we are doing, please take a look at the relevant section in our wiki.
In short: We are screening the genomes of all sequenced organisms systematically for homologs of known/new RNA families. Such calculations can be very complex.

I would have thought that to do this, you would need to be able to access the genomes, ie. that a VERY large database would need to be accessed. That is not extant on my computers, and I don't see a load of net I/O?

That's absolutely right. The project handles the genome database extraction in a BOINC client-independent fashion. Most of the time, each WU contains only one genome of one organism to be searched for one RNA family (or even only one chromosome of a genome if there are multile chromosomes present, as e.g. is the case for us humans). Exceptions are the very small genomes of viruses which we examine bundle-wise due to their fast run-times.

Okay, I understand. I say again, that despite a high quota value, my second machine here does not get a work unit to process.

That is normal at present, as we are currently running out of WUs (finishing up the final batch for this project stage).
