VirtualBox v5.1.0 - PROBLEMS

#1 Ungelesener Beitrag von Jacob Klein » 13.07.2016 00:28

First, a warning:
DO NOT USE VIRTUALBOX v5.1.0 on 1.17-or-earlier apps!
IT WILL MAKE THOSE TASKS FAIL!!

I did a test of the new VirtualBox v5.1.0, and ... it made my "cmsearch VM (VirtualBox) 1.0.2 1.17 (vbox64)" task immediately go to "Computation Error". In fact, I stupidly wasn't doing an offline test with a copy of my data folder, and so ... I actually LOST that task (and the 9 days of work it had done). Could have been worse, sure, but entirely preventable, and frustrating!

The text on the front page currently reads:
Use the most-recent version of VirtualBox. Note: If you have 1.15-or-earlier tasks, you must use VirtualBox 4.3.x.
I believe it should be changed to read:
- WARNING: VirtualBox 5.1.x is NOT COMPATIBLE currently, and will crash your tasks!
- If you have 1.15-or-earlier tasks, you must use VirtualBox 4.3.x or earlier.
- If you have 1.17 tasks, you must use VirtualBox 5.0.x or earlier.
So, if you only have 1.17 tasks, I recommend using VirtualBox v5.0.24 at this time.

The error I got, with VirtualBox v5.1.0, is pasted here.

Code: Alles auswählen

2016-07-12 18:33:48 (14092): vboxwrapper (7.7.26184): starting

Unhandled Exception Detected...
- Unhandled Exception Record -
Reason: Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x00007FF92338EBE5 read attempt to address 0xFFFFFFFE
I suspect an updated VBoxWrapper (and thus a new RNA World application release) will be required to fix it.
Perhaps Christian or Michael could find more info.
I also suggest they issue a "News" item regarding this info.

Thanks,
Jacob Klein

Rom Walton is testing a new VBoxWrapper (v26196), that is compatible with VirtualBox v5.1.0.

I did some *offline* testing with it, using a *copy* of my data folder, along with a properly-configured app_info.xml
VBoxWrapper v26196 was able to checkpoint/restore/start/poweroff, without any errors.
I did not test creating a new VM from scratch.

So, once Rom has finished testing it with CERN, my advice would then be to consider updating the RNA World cmsearch VM app, to use it.

.. along with updating the main page with:
- If you have 1.15-or-earlier tasks, you must use VirtualBox 4.3.x or earlier.
- If you have 1.17 tasks, you must use VirtualBox 5.0.x or earlier.
- If you have newer tasks, you may use VirtualBox 5.1.x.
Thanks,
Jacob Klein

I have not seen any email that indicates it is working. When I do I'm happy to create a new app version with an updated vboxwrapper.

Thanks Christian!
Whenever Rom tells you that it's ready, if you'd like me to thoroughly test it (everything except creating the VM at task startup), then let me know.

Christian,

Any word on when you guys can support v5.1.x? I ask, because Oracle has already dropped v4.3.x support with the silent release of v4.3.40 (I nudged frank to release that version actually)... and I expect them to drop v5.0.x support in the upcoming months.

I'd prefer any new tasks I get, to be capable of running on v5.1.x. Can you please update the wrapper yet?

I didn't hear anything about a working vboxwrapper version for 5.1 although someone claimed that ATLAS or LHC is running a vboxwrapper that is 5.1 compatible. But I don't know which version.

Hi Christian, I have found this in the thread for Atlas@Home posting.php?mode=quote&f=23&p=165953. Maybe it would help or is interesting for this topic.

I don't understand. I thought the latest vboxwrappers were compatible with 5.1.x.
What exactly do you need, in order to update the RNA World app? Is it something I can provide?

Note: I might be able to do some offline testing to see if the latest vboxwrapper works with 5.1.4 for Windows, but for RNA World, I can only test using my "in progress" VMs, and not any "start from scratch" VMs.
Would that testing be helpful to you?

If Atlas@home has good experience with this I consider it for an update. Don't know when yet.

Fair enough, perhaps I'll focus my efforts on testing 5.1.4, against Atlas's current vboxwrapper deployment, and also against the latest vboxwrapper.
Sounds like a fun holiday-weekend project, don't you agree? :)

Christian,

I spent some hours doing some research and some testing, regarding ATLAS@Home. My conclusion is that VBoxWrapper 26196 appears to be a winner for ATLAS@Home, and works with VirtualBox 5.1.4 on Windows (and reported success with Linux/Mac).

As far as the research goes, I recommend that you read the following ATLAS@Home threads:
8/4/2016 - Announces support for VirtualBox 5.1 - http://atlasathome.cern.ch/forum_thread.php?id=539
8/23/2016 - Announces multi-core VM app with support for VirtualBox 5.1 - http://atlasathome.cern.ch/forum_thread.php?id=556
9/1/2016 - Announces that VirtualBox versions < 5.00, are inefficient at multi-core; server will require >= 5.00 for multi-core - http://atlasathome.cern.ch/forum_thread.php?id=562

For my test, I used:
- Windows 10 x64 Insider Build 14915
- Oracle VirtualBox 5.1.4 r110228 with Extension Pack 5.1.4 r110228

My results were successful:
- I got 2 of their single-core apps. It used VBoxWrapper 26196. It started, checkpointed, suspended, resumed, exited, restored, completed... all without a problem. Completed and validated.
- I got 1 of their multi-core apps. It ran using 3 CPUs and used VBoxWrapper 26196. It started, checkpointed, suspended, resumed, exited, restored, completed... all without a problem. Completed and validated.
- Results: http://atlasathome.cern.ch/results.php?hostid=46106

Would you please consider validating my conclusion, testing VBoxWrapper 26196 for RNA World, and then deploying it?

Support for VirtualBox 5.1.x is important for RNA World, in my opinion, because the tasks take so long to complete, and VirtualBox will drop support for 5.0.x at some point.

Thanks,
Jacob

PS: 26197 exists, but I haven't tested it. Here are some useful links regarding it:
https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/commits/ ... boxwrapper
https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/commits/master/version.h

PPS: If you want me to do some other test, I can, but you'll need to be specific on what you want. It's time consuming for me, because I have so many RAN World tasks on my PCs that I must be super careful not to jeopardize.

An updated vboxwrapper is now included in the 1.18 cmsearch VM app for all platforms. I also updated the frontpage with the version info Jacob provided.
