A very long one
A very long one
http://www.rnaworld.de/rnaworld/result. ... d=14950995
It now has over 40 days on it and reports 78 to go. Progress 0.1%. Is it still OK.
You'll also see that all of my tasks appear to have failed for one reason or another. Can you help identify why that is? I'd not looked before and was unaware. AFAIK they were fine.
Thanks.

Can I get some help with this, please?

Re: A very long one
Checkout your wingmen here and expect VERY long runtimes.rebel9 hat geschrieben:http://www.rnaworld.de/rnaworld/result. ... d=14950995

Compare your computer capabilities to the indicated runtimes of other machines in that overview table.
I currently have a WU that has run for 6500 hrs, 650 hrs more to go. So this is nothing unusual for the VM tasks.
If these appear too demanding to you, just disable the VM tasks in the RNA World project settings.
Michael.

Re: A very long one
The 0.1% progress issue, is simply a display bug with the v1.16 version of the app. So, you can just ignore that, and continue working on the task -- if it's using up your CPU in Task Manager, then it's working.
There's not much info to go on, because a wingman has not completed this task.
First of all, please note that "Estimated time remaining" is pretty worthless for RNA World VM tasks, and "estimated runtime on reference system" (as seen in the Work unit details on the web) is also equally worthless.
Please see this thread for some of the logic on determining REAL estimates, if interested: viewtopic.php?f=75&t=16160
Regarding your task in particular, here's what we know:
Your CPU's details:
http://www.rnaworld.de/rnaworld/show_ho ... stid=37536
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4600U CPU @ 2.10GHz
PassMark Single Thread score: 1,719
A previous lengthy attempt someone tried on that work unit:
http://www.rnaworld.de/rnaworld/result. ... d=14949577
Attempt length: 99d 7:31:00 (8,580,660.00 s)
http://www.rnaworld.de/rnaworld/show_ho ... stid=39497
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1230 V2 @ 3.30GHz
PassMark Single Thread score: 1,935
So ... while very inconclusive, they ran for ~100 days on a CPU beefier than yours.
If I had to guess, I'd say this task will take anywhere between 140 to 350 days of CPU Time, to complete.
Until you or a wingman completes it, that's about the best estimate we have
So, keep the PC stable, always make sure BOINC is closed (plus wait 2 more minutes), before doing any software changes.
And enjoy the test of your patience, if you're willing to continue the attempt!
Good luck!

OK, thanks for the info. That helps a lot. It's the not knowing that's the misery. I'm happy to let it run now that I know it's doing something useful.Jacob Klein hat geschrieben: If I had to guess, I'd say this task will take anywhere between 140 to 350 days of CPU Time, to complete.

I have cmsearch XXL (long) 1.0.2 off but the VM WUs don't respect it, which is a problem that does need to be corrected. If these appear too demanding to you, just disable the VM tasks in the RNA World project settings.
Cheers.

Re: A very long one
There is a separate setting for cmsearch VM 1.0.2 that you need to disable. the XXL one is a totaly different application.rebel9 hat geschrieben:I have cmsearch XXL (long) 1.0.2 off but the VM WUs don't respect it, which is a problem that does need to be corrected.
Re: A very long one
Will there be any shorter tasks in the next few months?
At the moment I cannot commit to a task that will take several months.
Thanks!

Re: A very long one
Hard to say since we first need to build our scientific result database. At the moment we are short of people who have the skill to implement the database schema we want to have.

First of all I am happy that you like to continue to contribute to our project.randi hat geschrieben:Will there be any shorter tasks in the next few months?

Just do the following: Disable the VM tasks in your RNA World profile settings but keep RNA World in your BOINC manager allowing WUs to be retrieved.
As soon as the next batch of small tasks will be delivered, yor machine will receive these.

Re: A very long one
This errored out, as did the wingman's I see. I thought it had succeeded. I won't be wasting my time on these in the future. I appreciate the credit but I'm not prepared to tie up my machine for such ridiculous periods of time and they're clearly unreliable or, at best, VERY hard to get to complete. As it happens I have had to change machines and the one that was running this WU won't be with me for much longer so I was very happy to see it finish. To have it fail after such a huge commitment isn't acceptable, though. I hope that the VM WUs are respecting the prefs flag, now. If not, I'll be terminating them and, since I don't have a single successful WU from this project in the last 3 years, if I don't see some succeeding very soon I'll be dumping the project. I'm sorry but it's just not on. There are many more productive projects to contribute to.
Cheers.
Cheers.
Re: A very long one
OK, thanks. So which types of WUs are served this way? The project only seems to be serving VM WUs. Do these only contain long WUs or do they vary? If it's variable, then we absolutely need a way to determine which virtualised WUs we receive.ChristianB hat geschrieben:There is a separate setting for cmsearch VM 1.0.2 that you need to disable. the XXL one is a totaly different application.rebel9 hat geschrieben:I have cmsearch XXL (long) 1.0.2 off but the VM WUs don't respect it, which is a problem that does need to be corrected.
