cmsearch S (small) needs 3814 MB RAM - can't get new tasks

#1 Ungelesener Beitrag von shauge » 02.09.2011 08:22

I get this message on several of my machines today, I have to set boinc memory usage to 100% on a 4GB machine to get work.

This looks like a bug to me :)

Some possible explanations:

What system is this? Linux or Windows? 32 or 64bit?
Windows has a hardcoded memory limit of 3GB on 32bit systems.

Newer client versions report only available free memory (if I remember correct). So substracting current used memory by OS.

Note that what I posted was a message from the server that says that cmsearch S (small) requires 3.8 GB RAM. I don't believe that these tasks require should so much memory.

I have got this message on both at a machine running win 7 64bit and a machine running linux ubuntu 8.10 64 bit.

I know where this message comes from but after rereading your post I saw that you got it working with the 100% setting. I first thought it didn't work for you.

It seems that 'rsc_est_mem_usage' is set very high for some tasks. Probably a bug in workunit creation.

Update: This may be an intermediate problem. I shall monitor to see if my machines that only have 2 GB memory, get new tasks in between.

It can really be the case, that the workunits require so much ram. It is than totaly ok, that you don't get such a workunit if you have less ram available.

Indeed, this is no bug.

Michael,

Perhaps it is a good idea to explain your vollunteers what is going on with the RNA-project.

Yoyo mailed me that for the next two weeks only xxl-wu's are available for crunching using more then 3,800 MB memory.
So all computers using Windows-XP-32 bits are out for the moment????

Communication should be better, please!!!???

Good weekend,

That is actually news to me, too, and indeed, if this is really the case then Yoyo should have put that information on the main page news section.

I was indeed getting some messages about RNA WUs being paused due to lack of RAM. And I got a comp receiving the same message. In fact it does not seem to make too much sense as it has 1GB per thread while another HT machine works fine while just having 0.5 GB/thread, but obviously higher RAM usage settings.

However I had to mix some additional projects using less RAM to keep all CPUs busy.

A 32-bit memory address can only select from 4 GB of memory. For 32-bit operating systems systems that use only one 32-bit word to hold the address, all programs currently running, all of their data, the portion of the operating system currently in use, and any I/O mapped into the memory space must all fit within that 4 GB. For Windows, this often leaves around 3.5 GB that all of the 32-bit programs currently running must fit into.

However, some 32-bit operating systems (primarily those intended for servers) can use a little extra hardware to let a second 32-bit word be part of the address, and allow reaching much more memory.
