Question about ECM

Hello, I know this may be a very stupid question to a lot of people here, but let me preface this by saying my mathematical skill is very limited, almost primitive, so please, keep that in mind. 
I was just wondering if there is any relationship between the ECM project and modern IT cryptography? Does the ECM project help validate the currently used algorhitms? If I understand correctly, many of the now abandoned algorhitms were found insecure by the key being proven to be able to be factored, would that be the case with this project as well?
